This booklet discusses the changes that Pakistan has witnessed during its current phase of strong growth (more than 6 percent a year since 1977). Pakistan's effort to create an environment favorable to the efficient allocation and use of resources is particularly noted. In a country that has approximately 90 million people and many historical handicaps, change can be only gradual. As the booklet points out, much remains to be done to ensure that rapid growth is sustained and that its benefits reach the entire population. Nevertheless, the progress that Pakistan has made in restructuring its economy in the past twenty years-highlighted by the fall in the share of agriculture in GDP from 40 to 27 percent-encourages confidence in its ability to cope with tasks that lie ahead.
